Help With Phobias in Derby
Why do we develop Phobias ?
In providing help with Phobias in Derby its interesting to think about how Phobias develop. As we look back over our lives thinking about our Phobia it can seem like we’ve always had them. Therefore, we somehow have this thing within us that is somehow beyond our control.
Think about this though….When a person finds themselves in a situation of intense emotion their mind has the ability to ‘repress’ those emotions, and once those emotions have been bottled up, the mind can unfortunately create a phobia to warn that person not to get into the same situation again. Equally so a phobia can be learnt from another person ie. Your Mother was afraid of the thunder….so your young and impressionable mind learns that thunder is something to be afraid of…..and so starts the Phobia.
Whilst some Phobias may seem to have an obvious reason i.e. fear of fire, drowning etc. some clearly seem to make no sense at all. Rest assured, all Phobias serve a purpose. Some of the common ones include:
- fear of flying [Aerophobia]
- fear of spiders [Arachnophobia]
- fear of being sick [Emetophobia]
- fear of birds [Ornithophoba]
- fear of death or dying [Thanatophobia]
- fear of enclosed spaces [Claustrophobia]
- fear of open spaces [Agorabphobia] (Also can develop with Panic Disorder)
- fear of heights [Acrophobia]
- There are hundreds more !
“Hi Geoff, I wanted to send you a ‘thank you’ message. I came to you to try and achieve my phobia of birds which had controlled me all my life and was making every day living unbearable, but due to all your hard work and experience this phobia is well on its way to disappearing. I have to thank you for persevering with me when at times a breakthrough was looking unlikely. Its only through your patience and perseverance that this was eventually a success, so a massive ‘thank you’. Geraldine”
So how do you treat Phobias Geoffrey ?
I have found it interesting to discover over my years as a Therapist providing help with Phobias in Derby that some phobias (such as Fear of Flying) will respond to a “one off” session of Hypnotherapy (2 hours), whereas others such as Emetophobia (fear of being sick – or others being sick) require a few sessions (Hypnotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & Stress Management) to respond. Clearly, I will discuss with you your symptoms and the best way forward. As ever, advice and Consultations are always free – simply call me or email me for a confidential consultation.
