Geoffrey Schofield Hypnotherapist in Derby I wanted to write an article on myself : Geoffrey Schofield Hypnotherapist in Derby as I’m frequently asked how I got into becoming a therapist and during sessions it never seems quite pertinent to talk about myself – rather than my clients.
I must admit I’ve always been a caring type of person and what I’d call a people person. Having been a therapist for the last fifteen or so years my previous career was that of a Recruiter, for something like 20 years, again involved with people – and indeed I still get consulted on this part of my career. Recruitment then, and of course now still is a very pressurised environment and after some time in the ‘boiler room’ of that business I became very stressed – which effected my life to a large degree : early morning starts & late finishes, weekends, deadlines, financial pressures, few holidays etc etc took their toll and my sleep declined, I smoked and drank more (tea/coffee/alcohol) and became at times Mr Angry, unfit and generally unhealthy. When you’re in such a state unfortunately you cant see the wood for the trees and find it difficult to break out of that cycle.
Fortunately one of the consultants I worked with was similarly distressed and after a discussion we decided that therapy was a good option because at the end of the day what did we have to lose ? We both visited a Hypnotherapist who had worked in industry and understood the pressures we were under and I have to say that during these sessions I had never experienced such relaxation and it was as though a moment of realisation had dawned.
At that moment I knew exactly what I wanted to do. The internet in those days was very much in its infancy and information was scarce. That said I searched and scoured for information and arrived at an organisation that I wanted to learn from. I sold some musical equipment to raise some cash – which was sufficient to pay for my training and I became a qualified Hypnotherapist and went into practice on a part time basis.
The other pages of this website will give you information as to exactly how Hypnotherapy works – but in those early years of practice I came to the conclusion that as good a technique Hypnotherapy is, there were things that my clients could do when they weren’t in surgery that could affect the way they thought and behaved during the week. I therefore undertook further training (again outlined on this website) in the fields of Stress Management and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). This works rather like physiotherapy (where your therapist may give you exercises to work on to strengthen / mobilise you) but these are simply thought processes / relaxation exercises to help challenge / change your ways of thinking. This results in you completing therapy in the shortest time possible (unlike some therapies such as psychotherapy / counselling which can have you in therapy for 2-3 years – enough to bankrupt many people) and enable you to get on with your life within a few short weeks.
I therefore now operate as Geoffrey Schofield Hypnotherapist in Derby – trading as the Alexander Practice Derby from my office in Vernon Street Derby. I always offer free consultations and advice and as you would expect everything is in total confidence. Please don’t hesitate to call me or email me if I can help you more
